Agroindustry is a fast-growing sector. Agribusiness is of direct relevance to STEM as it uses quadcopters, artificial intelligence, and satellite technologies. Participants of the two-day Stem is Fem module had a chance to know more about the industry and agro professions.

The module took place online on the 12th and 13th of December. There were 35 high school girls from different Ukrainian cities and villages who participated in the venue. They attended motivational speeches, workshops, and lectures, and tried their hands at running an agribusiness online simulator.

The event was supported by representatives of the Office of the National Investment Council, United Nations in Ukraine, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, World Academy of Art and Science, and others. The speakers motivated girls to choose perspective professions that usually are marked as male ones and to re-establish gender balance in the agroindustry.

We’ve organized this module for two main reasons. On the one hand, we would like to show how technologies can be used in this sector, what processes can be automated, and what specialists should do. On the other hand, we would like to challenge a gender stereotype giving the floor to the women that have succeeded in this field. They become role models for the girls who take part in Stem is Fem module, their personal stories are the best examples to follow for the girls.

The module was joined by Anastasia Volkova, Ukrainian agricultural innovator, founder at FluroSat, and one of the top 100 influential and inspiring women from around the world for 2020, according to BBC. FluroSat helps farmers to obtain various data on the state of their crops. The system analyzes satellite images of the fields and photos taken by drones, applies AI technology, and, based on the information received, advises farmers on how best to handle the harvest.

Stem is Fem is a charity project initiated by Gamingtec that motivates girls to try professions that were previously male-dominated. The main goal is to break stereotypes and restore gender balance in employment.
